Got Goals? Try Accountability
“When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported, the rate of improvement accelerates.” — Thomas S. Monson
You need a plan
Here’s the thing about goals - It’s really great to have them, but you need a plan to accomplish them. You can say that you’re going to achieve them, but to do that you need to break your plan down into actionable steps, and someone to hold you accountable for accomplishing them.
The 3 crucial pillars
To me, accountability is one of the 3 crucial pillars that support business growth - planning, processes and accountability. Want to be responsible? Be accountable. They go hand in hand.
One of the biggest challenges for many entrepreneurs I work with is taking ownership of their time, energy and focus. As big picture thinkers, focusing on the day to day tasks is not their strong point. Every one of them has projects and things they want to do but they are just ideas until you create a plan and put it into accountability-driven action.
Although accountability is an important tool for getting things done, it’s not something we do well independently. We are more likely to break promises that we make privately to ourselves than if we share them with someone else.
According to a recent study, if you commit to a goal out loud to someone else, you have a 65% chance of completing the task. If you schedule regular calls with an accountability partner it can raise the rate of your success by up to 95%.
Many people aren’t sure exactly what this accountability stuff is, why it's important, or where it starts. I can tell you that it’s a powerful system that, when done right, can increase your productivity and help you follow through on those projects you’ve been dragging your feet on.
Everyday commitment
Accountability is not a once in a while when you feel like it thing. it's an everyday commitment to the growth and development of your business. It has to be worked at, tweaked and personalized until you’re getting what you need out of it.
So how do you do this? You get yourself an accountability coach or partner.
Once you decide who you’ll work with, your job is to stay focused on your goals and theirs, keeping each other on track. You have to be ready to tap someone on the shoulder to remind them what they should be doing and to forget about the pretty, shiny things that can distract them.
And you’re not only there to get and give moral support. Your partner can also tell you when you’re beating a dead horse and might want to choose a different approach to getting things done. Having support from someone else to get through a challenging or tedious project can make the process seem easier and more fun.
There’s a number of ways that I can help you with your accountability. Let’s talk more about moving you forward in your business and getting you closer to your goals.
