Who’s In Charge Here?

Last week I held my first Path of Action challenge, "Will You Run Your Day or Will Your Day Run You?"

During the three days, I talked to many business owners about how taking control of your time - adding structure and working with intention - actually helps bring you freedom. It can be a little counter-intuitive, but oh so true.

What Entrepreneurs struggle with

Some of the biggest challenges I see entrepreneurs grappling with are:

•   Trying to grow and scale a business while maintaining their sanity

•   Still being able to take time for themselves along with all the things they want to do

•   Wanting to know how to focus on the right activities to support their business growth

How to take control of your time

The action items I recommended each day were around taking control of their schedule and calendar, ensuring they were spending time on the MOST IMPORTANT activities in their business, and implementing a weekly planning process.

Each day after I went Live for the challenge in my Facebook group, “Create Your Path of Action”, the participants would leave thoughtful comments about the action items they were committing to and the insights they found striking.

Here are some of the comments I received about their takeaways:

“The question you asked that hit home was, “Do I see my goals reflected in my day-to-day tasks/ how I am spending my time?” Because I have a lot of ideas and I do not work towards putting them into action unless I plan it in around orders. Seems so key but I have not made goals for my business until this year.”

“I LOVE this - planning the next week before the weekend so I can actually enjoy the weekend and not worry about my business to-dos.”

“Blocking the first hour of the day for working on my business feels do-able schedule wise. It’s calming to know that I have space to plug away on the items that usually slide from week to week and stressed me out.”

“My biggest takeaway was scheduling time to work on things that will grow my business, rather than only scheduling my students and doing everything else whenever I have a chance!”

“Setting a daily ending time, actually adding 'tasks' into my calendar and LOOKING at it (not just referring to my client appointment times), scheduling my self-care time as that's always the last to go.”

“Blocking time. Planning gives me FREEDOM.”

One comment I want to focus on is this one:

“With your help I've already taken some pretty great strides in how I handle my schedule.”

You can implement your chosen actions immediately and begin to see the benefits almost instantly. Writing down your action intentions is great. Telling someone else, like an accountability buddy, is better. And sharing your goals and intended tasks with a group is awesome.

Make simple changes

As the reader, your biggest takeaway should be that these are simple shifts, not earth shattering transitions. The key is to establish these small changes as regular habits, so you can take three days of success and  turn it into 12 weeks and then 12 months of consistent progress.

Finding the right processes, planning them out and then executing the necessary tasks can be daunting initially. If you’d like support around creating the best strategy for your business, I have Path of Action Accountability groups starting soon.
