When you started your business, what did you skip over?
When you start a business, there are things you can’t help but skip over. You do your best to juggle all of the new responsibilities that come with business ownership, but you are only one person. This means you have to choose, and maybe even lose sight of things on the bottom of the list. So you focus on your top priorities and cross your fingers that the other things will get done at some point.
“I’ll get that done later when things settle down,” are the famous last words of the new entrepreneur.
Entrepreneurship is no joke. As the owner you wear all the hats, deal with unexpected challenges, and try to keep things moving forward. On top of that, you need ideas, creativity, positivity, and customer satisfaction to consider.
The most tedious things are the most avoided, but important to scaling and growing your business.
Common things entrepreneurs skip over
Maybe it’s something you don’t know how to do like bookkeeping. Or it could be a task you’re not comfortable with. For example, if you’re a “creative” and you need a system or structure put in place and you don’t know where to start. Or you could be so consumed by finding the best way to provide your services, that you don’t even realize the other things you should be doing - like creating an onboarding process for clients or implementing a task management system so you can get stuff done.
Things will eventually settle down. You’ll establish a work schedule and get into a rhythm. You’ll have some consistent success and feel confident that you are ready to up-level.
However, scaling your business and maintaining consistent growth leaves less room for error than just starting out does - which means before you go forward you have to go back and fill in the gaps you left in the beginning by revisiting what you skipped over.
For growth, you need to take control of your time, you need a way to manage tasks, and you need to work through basic systems such as onboarding. Stop and think for a minute about what is holding you back. What systems do you need to put into place to scale your business?
Here are a few things you will need to strengthen your foundation before you try to scale.
Onboarding and Offboarding
If you want to be treated like a professional you need to show up like one. Having easy and clear systems for getting started with your clients and then successfully ending a project will greatly influence your client’s experience with you.
Bookkeeping
No more numbers scribbled on post it notes at this point. You need a simple, organized system to track your revenue, expenses, and profit.
And if you can’t handle the bookkeeping, you can hire a bookkeeper.
A CRM
A client relationship management system will help you track new leads and potential clients so you can nurture those relationships and build your business.
Task Management
As your business grows, so will your to-do list. It’s best to keep it in a task management system like Click-Up, Trello, or Asana. This will be super helpful when it’s time to hire a…..
Virtual Assistant
This is someone you delegate tasks and actions to so you can focus on your zone of genius. There are all types of VA’s. They can specialize in marketing, tech, or general administrative tasks.
