Laura Janusik: Reaping the Rewards of Group Accountability

Laura Janusik, a Listening and Communication Trainer and Coach, recently participated in one of my twelve-week Path of Action Accountability groups. She had taken part in an accountability group once before at a previous job, so she knew it worked.

Laura spent a year trying to figure out which direction was the one to take

As a relatively new entrepreneur, Laura had spent a year trying to figure out which direction was the one to take, so she ended up with tons of great ideas but not one of them completed. She found herself distracted by all the shiny objects and began to feel blocked and defeated, like she was never going to be able to accomplish what she needed to achieve her goals.

Laura was hesitant to pay for accountability. But I reached out to her at the right time and she decided to try it out.

We started with an initial 90-minute meeting. She knew she would get things done, but she wasn’t sure what or how.  On the call we talked about Laura’s long and short term goals, and her abundant list of exciting ideas. Then we kept narrowing the list down until we were satisfied with the top three goals she really wanted to hone in on and make progress with.

I take detailed notes at every meeting - what each person feels good about, what they accomplished, where they struggled, and what their strategy is for the coming week. Not only to establish accountability, but to offer support when things get hard.

Others in the group were struggling with the same things and she wasn’t alone

The immediate benefits for Laura were knowing that others in the group were struggling with the same things and she wasn’t alone, and that she could still accomplish all of her goals, she just had to focus on a few at a time. This was a pleasant surprise - she wasn’t aware of the supportive group energy the program would provide.

“At first I thought I’d  suffer great embarrassment in not hitting a goal, or be chided by Kathleen and the other participants,” Laura told me. Her experience was just the opposite. “They make you feel like you can do more, and when you have a weekly setback, they strategize to get you back on track and figure out how to make up for lost time.”

She not only felt accountable to me, but to everyone in the group who supported her success

Each group starts as a bunch of strangers, different people with different goals, but Laura quickly realized that those differences meant each person would have unique ideas and feedback to help each other with their accountability. She did not only feel accountable to me, but to everyone in the group who supported her success.

As a result of the group connections, Laura was introduced to virtual assistants, received a tip on a free program to create invoices and accept on-line payments, and introduced to a great networking group.

During the 12 weeks she went from spinning her wheels to taking control and staying on track each week. She got clear on exactly what actions to take to achieve her goals. By the time the group ended she had increased her sales and reached an income goal she had set for herself, and then set an additional money goal. She also created a series of videos for a group program and worked through a very in-depth certification process.

Although the group ended weeks ago, she continues to utilize the simple tools and resources provided and continues to communicate her successes to the group. She knows she has reliable systems in place that are easy for her to lean on.
