Choosing My Word(s) of the Year: How They Affect My Clients

Desk with keyboard, coffee, clock letters that spell 2023 and a notepad that says three words: dynamic, undistracted, and lift.

I have chosen a word each year for a while now, and a major factor in my choice has been how the words will affect my clients. This year my accountability partner talked me into choosing my words - three of them! She prefers the mantra-like chant the words make when you need some encouragement.

We have gotten into the wonderful habit of doing a year-end review together in early December. First, we hash through our accomplishments and challenges, wins and missed opportunities for the past 12 months. Then we look at the coming year and talk about what we really want to happen in the new year.

I spent 2022 getting things in place. I added a few key team members, gained clarity on services I love offering, and put solid strategies in place. Now I’m ready for bigger success in my business, and for my clients.

The three words I settled on are:

  • Dynamic

  • Undistracted

  • LIFT

It took me a while to land on these three. I spent some time on Word Hippo (www.wordhippo.com) really honing in on the true meanings of the words I chose. I wanted them to be action oriented, and to benefit my clients and the work I do with them.

The first word that came to me was “impactful”. A great word, but you can make an impact unknowingly, and it doesn’t always spur direct action. After researching a bit, the better word for me here is…

Dynamic

There were two definitions that resonated with me - “able to produce results”, and “creative in energy and output.” BOOM! I wanted to deliberately continue and increase the big difference I was making with clients. I feel the same way about other business owners and referral partners in networking and social media engagement. I want to offer value and support that really matters.

Next, I thought about the word, “focus”. There were so many uncontrollable distractions for me in 2022, personally and in the world around me. In looking for ways to grow my business, I let the choices other people were making catch my eye. So, the second word I landed on is…

Undistracted

This year, I have two college graduates moving home. I worked hard in 2022 to get super clear on the services I offer now and I don’t need to lose my attention to other options, ideas - or “roommates”. I want to set boundaries around my space and time so I can double down on what I’m doing. My strategy contains actions to keep me in my lane and moving forward. This feeling carries over into my non-work life. I think this is the outcome of being tired of the upheaval in the world around us in the past few years.

Third and final, I wanted something that represented the feeling that the word “up-level” evokes. Like many overused words, it’s overused because it’s not easy to replace. And different words resonate differently for each person. So, the word I settled on, in all capitals, is…

LIFT

This word is about action, for me and for my clients. every time I wrote it I was pulled to write it in capital letters. I use my hands to fully describe the power and energy this word has for me.  By LIFTing my business to its potential, I have the ability to give my clients an equally powerful LIFT.

These words will be a beacon for me in 2023. But they can’t shine a light on a path of action if I haven’t clarified that yet. So, I have goals and I have a plan to execute the necessary actions to achieve them. And I can help you do the same with one of my workshops or programs. Schedule a time to talk with me and we can see which service is best for your needs.
